We met them in West Village at Mi Cocina, because our choices are limited with Shadow in tow. But we all had a good time and the pictures are too cute not to share.

Mambos @ MiCo
A few weeks ago, actually a little over two, Kevin and I went to dinner with two of his friends John and Melissa. They brought one of their friends and her boyfriend who were in Dallas to escape the hurricane down south.
We met them in West Village at Mi Cocina, because our choices are limited with Shadow in tow. But we all had a good time and the pictures are too cute not to share.

Newww Yawwwkk!
Last Thursday morning had a rough start – we had to be at DFW by 5:00am. But after much coffee and a cat nap on the plane, Kevin and I were too excited to sit still when we landed. The cab ride was interesting…I forgot how crazy those drivers are.
We ended up saving a huge chunk of change at our accommodations. Kevin has an old friend whose husband is in charge of sales for 1600 Broadway. We got a studio for the first two nights in the city before we went to the Hamptons, then when we came back to the city on Monday night we stayed in a one bedroom that could easily sell for $1.5 million. Wicked deal…it pays to know people.

After we got in, we went to lunch in the upper West Side at Rosa Mexicano. Then we walked down to and around Central Park, then to H&M. Kevin gave up and sat in the designated “husbands and boyfriends” couch area (not really, but it was obvious why they had couches) while I lapped the store at least 10 times and spent more money than I needed, but WHATEVER.
That night we had dinner at one of Bobby Flay’s restaurants, Bar Americain and I had the BEST Vidalia Onion Soup (not to be confused with French Onion) EVER. It’s my new recipe challenge to make at home.
After dinner, we saw Wicked (awesome by the way…I’m totally a Wicked Witch fan now) and made it just in time. They won’t allow alcoholic drinks into the theater, so the bartender pulled a sneaky trick and put them in kid souvenir cups for the “small” cost of $13 each. Then we went to the Dizzy Coca-Cola jazz club but it was too touristy so we left after one drink to go home and catch some much needed ZZZs.
We woke up Friday morning and jumped on the subway to south Manhattan, around Noho and Soho. We walked by NYU then found this cute little Italian bistro for lunch.

Then we made our way down to Canal Street…and WHOA. It’s like a SWAT operation down there when you buy fake purses! We started at the top of Canal Street. After about 100 yards, it looked like I wasn’t going to get anything good. Kevin kept promising we’d see something, but it all looked very generic and cheap. We got lucky and found a small upstairs shop and Kevin bought me a little something.
But I wanted more of a selection, so I tried my luck for finding other counterfeits. Not far from the last location, Kevin sees another Asian woman and whispers, “handbags?” and she pulls me off Canal onto a side street. After interrogating where I was from, she ordered me to go across the street to the red awning and she would “call her sistah”. The sister watched us as we crossed the street, and then locked the storefront door behind us after we walked in. Then, a magic door opened (literally, it looked like the wall) and we went up some rickety wooden stairs to an attic with a plethora of fake merchandise. As we walked down, the guy said to us “If anyone ask where you get this, you tell him no. You know no.” Done!
That night we went to dinner at Tao in the city with some of Kevin’s friends, Bill and Tiffany. After dinner, Kevin and I found a little hole in the wall bar where we finished off the night.
Saturday morning, we slept in pretty late. and got the convertible rent-a-car and headed out of the city. We were supposed to go out to the Hamptons but little did Kevin know, his two sisters (Denise, from Long Island; and Teri, who flew in from Illinois) planned a big surprise birthday party at Denise’s house that afternoon.
My camera never made it out (ugh) but hopefully I’ll have pictures of the party soon from others. It was nice to put faces with names, and Kevin looked unbelievably happy. They threw a great party…thank you Denise, Teri, Rob, Bill, and everyone!
We left Denise’s house on Sunday morning and got my first HECSPK (ham, egg, cheese, salt, pepper, ketchup on a bagel). Best breakfast ever…the water out there is really soft so the dough is really unique. We drove out to the Hamptons and ate lunch in Southhampton, at a great local pub with Bill, Tiff and Rob.
Then Kevin drove me to the beach and out on Dune Road, with was “the road” (or one of many) in Southhampton with ocean-side mansions that price in the $30-60 million range. I saw multiple 10,000 to 15,000 square foot homes that were literally 50 yards from the ocean foam. I even saw Calvin Klein’s house!
Kevin and I took a nice walk on the beach. We picked up two seashells to commemorate our trip and stood in the cold Atlantic water. It was really beautiful there.
That night we went out to Sag Harbor and had dinner and some drinks. Long Island is nothing like I had expected, it’s so different depending on what area of the island you’re in…and it’s a lot bigger than I had anticipated.
We stayed at Bill’s condo on Sunday night, then on Monday we took the more scenic route through the north and south forks Long Island. There are about 25 vineyards thru North Fork and we stopped for tastings at three. We hopped the forks using a small car ferry, which I’d never been on before. It was really cool.

On Monday night, I went to dinner with my college friend Megan to the Mermaid Inn. I absolutely love her. LOVE her. I’m so glad I got see her. She’s such a true city girl now…her three bedroom apartment is about the size of my one bedroom and she lives five stories up…with no elevator. What a trooper.
Tuesday morning we got up to see Megan at her work because I forgot to take a picture with her the night before. It was so nice to see her twice in one trip!

Afterwards went to see the Top of the Rock, where you stand on top of Rockefeller Center. What a view!

Our last adventure was a trip back down the red awning shop on Canal Street. I picked up some gifts and we ate a nice place in Little Italy.
Then we went back to the apartment and got our luggage and cabbed it back to La Guardia. On our way home, we picked up Leigh and Lance at another terminal (who had landed before us, coming in from their Florida vacation) and took them home, sharing stories the whole way.
What a great trip…I can’t wait to go back with Kevin!

I promise but I can't deliver
I promised approximately 55 people today that I would have a blog ready tonight about our trip to New York City, Long Island and the Hamptons recently. I don't like to disappoint, but I'm still working on it.
But if you'll check back some time this weekend I PROMISE I'll have a big post (or posts) involving pictures, food outings and stories...including the ones about our visit to the secret operation on Canal Street and the Wicked Witch of the East, or is it West?
I blame catching up on things to do since I've been back and unfortunately my blog has suffered. Don't give up on me just yet, it's coming!

Romosexuals (well, at least I am)
Duhn-duh-dun-duh!!!
Football season is here!
Normally this time of year, Kevin and I would be packing up and heading to Addison to join his nephew Jeremy and his buddies at Zen to watch the games. Every time Dallas scores a touchdown, Jeremy spins his Cowboys hardhat and everyone does a cheer…classic.
But with the newest member in the household (I’ll let you guess – he’s about 9 years old in human years, kinda short with four paws and black), this is no longer an option. Instead, we decided to host our own party. We invited some of our closest friends and had a good turnout.
Leigh came over first, around noon or so. We had mimosas waiting for her, as well as a frozen slushy drink called Bullfrogs that I had at the Cookie Lee party on the day before. Leigh, being the AWESOME cook that she is (I try to outshine her when I can, but there’s no stopping this girl. She gives me a run for my money so I’ve learned to share the kitchen), brought a few amazing side dishes and appetizers.
Kevin sure did enjoy those Bullfrogs
Marching in the army. Don't ask.

By the time that everyone showed up and halftime was over, we were beginning to get full of dips and appetizers. AND a little silly from all of the drinks. Mr. Mimosa/Adolf/Cheesy Moustache made an appearance. Which EVERYONE insisted on wearing. Hence below…
Kevin ended the afternoon with his famous pouty face. I swear, it gets me every time. I think he knows he could get away with anything…and I wouldn’t tell him no.
Better than Tupperware
Today I went to a Tupperware-type multi-level marketing party, except it was for jewelry. My good friend Erin hosted it for her sister, who’s a consultant. It’s called Cookie Lee and I’d suggest giving it a look. Pretty cute stuff for very reasonable prices.
I had the chance to see a few girlfriends that I feel like I never get to see (Jackie, Amy, Christy, Nicole, Jammi, Erin) because I’m not really in the “big group” anymore, but they still love me and I feel grateful that they still invite me to things. Thanks gals! See you at the next GNO!

News Flash
I have a new power cord, so the laptop is now alive.
Per Kevin: "Look it up on Wikipedia. Mac Nerd = Nikki" (Jammi asked me today why I didn't steal a power cord from work. I had to explain that I hate workish PCs and that my Mac is "special")
And I got hit on while buying it at the Apple store on Knox. How sweet is that. Kidding (Kevin!)
Look forward to me blogging as always.

Labor Day Schambor Day
Labor Day started for Kevin on Friday morning – me, not so much. He flew out to Vegas for one of his good friends’ birthdays and I stayed in Dallas. I stayed in town on Friday night for Leigh's birthday dinner, then Saturday morning I picked up Shadow from the kennel and took him out to Granbury. Let’s just say it’s a good thing I have black leather interior for a black dog who sheds enough fur to make winter coats for the entire country of Indonesia.
I cleaned Kevin’s house all day Saturday – it needed a good scrub. My friend Shelbi, from Muleshoe, and her boyfriend Russ were supposed to come in around 5pm for the weekend. I guess the Scholtzsky’s in Abilene was far too interesting as they spent a few hours there on their way here, but they finally rolled in around 10pm. They wanted to go to the Groggy Dawg, but I couldn’t leave Shat-oh (Shadow's new nickname..for the dog that shats when we're not home) by himself so I stayed back and bummed around the house.
After their adventures at the redneck boathouse bar, they came back to Kevin's and we all stayed up until 5am playing pool and drinking adult beverages.

Sunday, we went out on my family’s Malibu and played on the water. I skied, Shelbi skied, and waited around for Kevin to get in from his trip.

Sunday night, we held a BBQ party at Kevin’s. Lisa, Brent, my parents, Jordan, two Shelbis, Russ, Kevin and I all stuffed our faces with great food and had a great time. I think the Patron even made an appearance.
Monday morning I woke up feeling sick as a dog, but I finally gathered up the energy to get out of bed. We all went to lunch at the new Jalapeno Tree, which is still working out some kinks so it wasn’t the greatest…but it has potential. We took Kev’s boat out to “party cove” – I don’t know how everyone else drank beer. I sat in the shade with a huge bottle of clear liquid goodness and rehydrated.
We finally made it home around 10 on Monday night. A long but successful weekend of no labor.

It's plugged in between the leather chair and sofa
My sincerest apologies for the delay in posting, but I PROMISE, I'm getting it done! But I have a slight problem that's causing a hiccup in my progress...I left my laptop power cord at Kevin's house in Granbury. Oops.
While I was blogging on Saturday night about Friday night's event, Shelbi and Russ came back from the bar (it's a long story that will be included in my next blog or two) and I shut down my computer without even bothering to unplug the power cord from the wall.
I started looking for it last night but knew immediately where it was. So now I have to decide if I want to spend 80 George Washingtons on a new power cord or wait until I can get back down to the lake to get mine.
So until I make a decision, all of my pictures are sitting on a dead computer and I refuse to post without them. I'm sure you understand.
